As it became obvious that England, who Scotland drew with just a few weeks ago, were winning, Scots decided to take the news on our collective chins and have a laugh.
Football fans were quick to comment that Scotland should surely be an official runner up following our recent even score when we played against England.
One said: “Just realised if England were to win Euro 2020, the only team they wouldn’t have beaten along the way would be Scotland.
“By the powers of logic (not the powers of football) that would make Scotland runners-up.”
Another added: “If England win every game bar the Scotland one, does that mean we share the trophy?”
And someone else said: “I tell you what, Scotland’s win in the 0-0 Cup against this rampant England side is looking almost impressive!!
“There is an argument that Scotland were the best team they played seeing as they were the only team England didn’t score against.”
Yet another ventured: “Scotland only team England have not scored against. Therefore we should get readmitted to the Final.”
For those who found the score agonising, Scots comedians came up with ideal solution to avoid any gloating from our English pals.
Scott Agnew wrote on Twitter: “Scottish Public Service Announcement – ScotMid shuts 10pm – get up the road, grab some Scottish Blend and Walkers Shortbread – STV Player has Take The High Road from series one – get some Mrs Mack action to pass the week. DO NOT TUNE IN TO ANY OTHER BROADCAST MEDIA. #UKRENG.”
Fellow funny guy Ray Bradshaw also suggested: “If England beat Ukraine we should get the option of Scottish commentary on the telly for the semi final. ‘Kane has sclaffed that in aff the keepers nut, the jammy b*****d’
He added: ‘Expecting record sales of bacon, pastries and Carslberg in Scotland on Wednesday.”
Comedian and viral star Mark Nelson laughed: “Too early for a Crimea river joke?”
And another fan questioned if it was a bit of a conspiracy saying: “Convinced now the england scotland draw was some sort of mi5 op to keep the union intact.”
