Schoolboy stabbing prompts special police powers in city suburb

Police have brought in emergency powers in a Birmingham suburb just days after a vicious stabbing of a schoolboy. A 16-year-old was knifed in Erdington High Street on Tuesday (June 21) at around 5.50pm.

And now Erdington police have confirmed they have brought in powers to break-up groups and move people on from Thursday (June 23) evening to 5am on Friday (June 24). Erdington High Street had to be sealed off on Tuesday evening when the teenager was stabbed. He was initially treated by police and then paramedics after receiving a stab wound to his leg.

The youngster who had suffered ‘potentially serious injuries’ was then taken to hospital with the injuries ‘not believed to be life-threatening’. West Midlands Police have not arrested anyone and were carrying out enquiries.

Now the Erdington Police team has issued a dispersal order which covers the town centre and includes an area bordered by Summer Road , High Street and Station Road, including the main road through the area – Sutton New Road.

West Midlands Police ‘s Erdington team Tweeted: “We have a Dispersal Order in place in Erdington until 5am tomorrow (June 24) to disrupt anti-social behaviour and prevent potential violence. The order gives officers extra powers to break up groups and ask anyone to leave the area whose behaviour may cause anti-social behaviour.”

It is the second dispersal order issued by West Midlands Police officers on Thursday, with a separate order issued covering the city centre on Thursday evening after reports of ‘school children organising fights’ in the city. The two orders are not believed to be related.
