Shock photos have shown the devastation left behind after a roof collapsed above diners in a Scots restaurant amid flash floods.
Pier Brasserie, in Edinburgh, became one of worst-hit businesses in the city after their roof caved in just 20 minutes after the onset of torrential downpours.
Pictures show the scale of the mess left behind after dramatic scenes saw the roof come crashing down while diners were relaxing in the stylish bar and grill.
Parts of the roof have been left scattered on the restaurant’s floor
Edinburgh Live reported how the restaurant felt like “the punching bag of life” after the mid-service incident on Sunday when the city was battered with rain.
Mark Patonyi, Managing Director at Pier Brasserie, revealed that kind-hearted customers had sprung to the staff’s aid when the roof gave way.
He told Edinburgh Live: “The ceiling collapsed in the middle of service on Sunday night, we had nine tables in and 60 more to come during the course of the evening.
“Suddenly the rain just started pouring in and in a matter of just twenty minutes there was too much weight in the roof and the ceiling just collapsed in.
“The customers who were in were total superstars – we had to shut off the electricity and gas mid-service and everyone was so supportive, some even helped us to mop up the endless water coming in.”
The unlucky restaurant has been forced to shut until further notice.
Mark added: “There’s now just such a long line of action to take so that we can reopen – we need to wait for everything to dry out from the volume of water that got in. The plasterers arrived today and then we’ll have electricians, then people to fix the light fittings and fire alarms, then an extraction engineer to do the ventilation.
“Next we’ll need decorators and finally the whole place will need a visit from some industrial cleaners so that we can safely reopen – it’s a long process to get our doors open again. The time scale all depends on how quickly each person in this huge chain finishes, we just have to be hopeful that it’ll be soon.”
