Murdered Glasgow dad John McGregor told killer ‘you’re a dafty’

A murder victim told his killer: “You’re a dafty and so are all your pals,” it’s been claimed.

John McGregor goaded the gunman before he was shot at point-blank range, sources say.

It has been claimed the shooter’s weapon jammed before he fired into the dad-of-five’s chest.

Insiders say McGregor, 44, walked towards his killer while hurling insults just before he was fatally wounded.

Seconds later the gunman was filmed jogging back to a white getaway car as his victim lay dying in Westray Street in Glasgow’s Milton.

The horrific incident happened last Thursday at about 7.55pm. A Vauxhall Corsa linked to the shooting was found burnt out hours later in Cumbernauld.

Police launched a murder probe when McGregor died in hospital on Saturday.

A source said: “All hell was breaking loose between two groups when John McGregor started heading towards the guy with the gun.

“He said something like, ‘What are you going to do with that? You’re a dafty and so are all your pals.’

“He kept going towards the guy, who eventually shot him after the gun jammed.

“There was a loud bang and he just fell to the ground.”

The shooting came shortly after a feared 42-year-old thug linked to the notorious Daniel crime family deliberately drove a Transit van into a Mercedes parked in the same street.

He targeted another member of the organised crime group who was in the passenger seat of the car. The intended 28-year-old victim is facing charges at the High Court in Glasgow.

His co-accused are also linked to the Daniel gang, which has been split by infighting.

It emerged yesterday that another clan associate was the victim of a machete attack 24 hours before the gun bloodshed.

The 31-year-old was set upon by two thugs in Edgefauld Road in Glasgow’s Springburn.

The victim, who survived a shooting in 2019, was taken to Glasgow’s Royal Infirmary.

And insiders say police gave him an Osman – also known as a Threat To Life Warning – the day after the attack and ordered him not to retaliate.

One source said: “The attack was a bad one. He’s going to be left with bad scars.

“The next day cops gave him an Osman and told him not to retaliate. It’s being examined as part of the murder.”

The Record revealed a 14-year-old boy was caught up in the mayhem and McGregor’s alleged killer is a former friend of kingpin Jamie Daniel, who died from cancer in 2016.

Sources say the lad is the son of the van driver who was a close associate of murdered gangster Kevin “Gerbil” Carroll.

It’s also been claimed the gunman is in his early 60s.

CID officers were yesterday still in the area carrying out door-to-door inquiries.

But it’s understood they have hit a wall of silence over fears potential witnesses could face reprisals for co-operating.
