Gerrard told how many transfers he needs this summer to achieve NSWE dream

Steven Gerrard has been backed to lead Aston Villa into Europe but must make six to seven signings this summer for them to bridge the gap to the top six.

Villa are expected to spend big this summer, with a move for Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho on the agenda after dazzling during his loan spell so far.

A swoop for Leeds United talisman Kalvin Phillips has also been suggested as one of Gerrard’s top targets this summer, while Brighton’s Yves Bissouma has also made the list of desired players.

Gerrard has made no secret of his plans to take Villa to another level, with owners NSWE keen for the club to break into the top six and return to Europe. And according to former Villa defender Richard Dunne, Villa must undergo major surgery this summer if they are to realise their dream of threatening the established order.

“He can definitely get them into Europe in the future,” Dunne told BoyleSports. “This season was just about getting in there and understanding the team, the squad and finding out where they are and where they need strengthening.

“He came in and immediately secured their place in the Premier League and he did that brilliantly. They’re an exciting team to watch but they have weaknesses and need to spend money. “If he is backed, I think they will be challenging for Europe in the coming years. They need maybe six or seven new players if they are to really improve.”

On his summer transfer plans, Gerrard said earlier this year: “I don’t think there will be any youngsters or potential coming in, in the short term, because it’s clear to me since walking through the door with our run of fixtures that we need players who are ready to help us now.”

“At a club that’s been inconsistent for a long time, when you recruit, a big part of that has to be leadership. It’s not just about adding talent and adding talent. It’s about having the right ingredients to take the XI forward and to make the squad better in all kinds of different compartments and, if they’re leaders, it’s a huge bonus.”
