Gerrard targets further Villa transfers amid stunning January window

Steven Gerrard says he is looking for “steel and style” at Aston Villa and has targeted further additions to his squad this month.

Fresh from signing Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Digne from Everton, Villa are being linked with a £40m swoop for Brighton’s Yves Bissouma.

Villa’s business has been nothing short of sensational so far, underling the commitment of the owners and the pull of former England and Liverpool captain Gerrard.

And with Villa targeting a strong second half to the season, as they welcome Manchester United to Villa Park today, Gerrard says he is still hoping to add more players, with a centre-back on the agenda.

“There might be opportunities again,’ he said. “It is steel and style we are looking for.

“Can we find that level of player who is going to improve the team, or do we need cover for injuries or suspension?

“I like to have four centre backs and we only have three, so we are analysing that situation.”

Villa yesterday completed another arrival when Kerr Smith arrived from Dundee United and will head straight into the under-23s.

Goalkeeper Robin Olsen is also said to be on his way with Roma set to terminate his loan deal with Sheffield United and send him to Villa Park.

The claret and blue have been eager to add a third goalkeeper to their books to add more backup to Jed Steer and Emi Martinez.

And Roma boss Jose Mourinho has done Villa head coach Gerrard a favour having sanctioned his departure, which has seen him agree to terminate Olsen’s loan move at Sheffield United.

That is set to pave the way for Olsen to join Villa with personal terms all agreed on a deal until the end of the season.

Romano said on Twitter: “Robin Olsen from Sheffield to Aston Villa now at final stages, agreement in place. Last details to be resolved.

“AS Roma will cancel loan to Sheffield and then will let Olsen join Aston Villa until the end of the season. Olsen already agreed personal terms with Villa.”

The news comes after former Sheffield United goalkeeper Paddy Kenny told the Blades to agree to terminate the loan of Olsen so he can seal his switch.

Olsen is no stranger to the Premier League, having spent the 2020/21 campaign on loan with Everton. He was then sent to the Blades this term but has not nailed down a first-team place.
