Cash could get international call-up next month – for Poland

Aston Villa right-back Matty Cash could make his international debut next month – for Poland.

The 24-year-old is set to receive a fresh approach from the nation to feature in their World Cup qualifiers in October, the Daily Mail have reported.

Cash qualifies for the nation on his mother’s side, and there has previously been contact between the full-back’s agent and the Polish FA, but there was reluctance on his part to commit to the country with England hopes still harboured.

However, Cash could hardly play in a more competitive position for England, with not only Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier and Reece James all regularly featuring in the squad, but with plenty of other contenders on the fringes, like Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Tariq Lamptey, Kyle Walker-Peters, and James Justin.

Speaking last year, Cash said accepting a call-up for Poland is something he would consider.

“My mum is actually half Polish and speaks the language fluently,” he told Sky Sports. “There’s been contact with my agent about playing for Poland and it’s something that I would look at.

“I just have to keep playing well and keep progressing before I make any decision. It’s nice to have an option.”

If he chose to represent Poland, Cash could take on San Marino and Albania next month when World Cup qualifiers continue.

Poland are in England’s group, the two playing out a 1-1 draw this month, and are currently third, five points behind England and a point behind Albania with four games to play.

The top team qualifies automatically for Qatar 2022, while the team in second moves into the play-offs.
