Black Canary HBO Max movie: Everything you need to know

HBO Max is bulking out the DC Universe with numerous shows and films, and the latest to be announced is Black Canary.

Dinah Lance was first introduced in Birds of Prey, the Harley Quinn ensemble flick that followed some of the more morally grey characters from the DC universe as they teamed up to defeat the despicable Roman Sionis (AKA Black Mask).

If you’d like to know more about Black Canary, including the cast and crew, release date and how to watch it, then keep on reading. We also have a similar article for the John Cena led show, Peacemaker.

When is the release date for the Black Canary film?

Black Canary doesn’t yet have a release date. All we know is that it is in the works, and is still in the very early stages.

If we were to take a guess, we imagine that we won’t see the film until around 2023 – but if we hear anything else, we’ll update this article.

What is the plot of Black Canary?

Plot details are also sparse for Black Canary. Dinah Lance is the only character announced so far, so it could either be a prequel to when we first saw her in Birds of Prey, or a continuation of her story within the DC Universe.

Comicbook.com has speculated that there could be an appearance of Oliver Queen/Green Arrow, considering this character’s close connection to Black Canary in the comics. This is also someone who hasn’t yet been introduced to the DCEU, so it seems like a natural choice.

Who are the cast and crew of Black Canary?

So far, only Jurnee Smollett has been confirmed to star. She will be under the direction of Misha Green, the writer and showrunner of HBO Max’s Lovecraft Country, which was unfortunately cancelled after one season.

Where can I watch Black Canary?

Black Canary has been announced as a HBO Max exclusive. This means that you’ll need an account with this streaming service – the ad-supported plan costs $9.99 per month, whilst the ad-free one costs $14.99 per month. You can sign up over on the HBO Max website

There haven’t yet been plans announced for international distribution. Territories that have HBO Max (like Latin America) should get the film, but otherwise it will likely be syndicated to partner channels such as Sky/Now in the UK, just like the Justice League Snyder Cut was.

Failing that, there is still a way to watch HBO Max outside of the US.
