The Duke of Sussex made a surprise appearance at the GQ Awards just hours after complaints about Piers Morgan’s controversial comments about Meghan Markle were rejected by Ofcom

Prince Harry makes surprise speech at GQ awards

Prince Harry delighted audiences at the GQ awards on Wednesday night when he took to the stage via video to make a surprise speech.

During the speech, the Duke of Sussex urged governments to do more to vaccinate poorer countries as he presented a prize to Professor Dame Sarah Gilbert, Professor Catherine Green and the team behind the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine.

Prince Harry also went on to slam “those who peddle in lies and fear” in the news and on social media for creating anti-vaxxers.

“Families around the world are being overwhelmed by mass-scale of misinformation across news media and social media, where those who peddle in lies and fear are creating vaccine hesitancy, which in turn leads to divided communities and eroding trust,” he told.

“This is a system we need to break if we are to overcome Covid-19 and the risk of new variants.”

Prince Harry’s appearance comes just hours after ITV was cleared by media regulator Ofcom, which has rejected a record 58,000 complaints about Piers’ criticism of the Duchess of Sussex.

Meghan Markle herself filed complaints with the regulator and ITV but Ofcom said restricting Piers’ views would be a “chilling restriction” on free expression.

However, the regulator did criticise his “apparent disregard” for the subject of suicide.

And on Wednesday morning, Piers took to Twitter to celebrate his triumph as he branded Meghan Markle “princess Pinnochio”.

Piers said he was “delighted” with the ruling, which he described as “a resounding victory for free speech and a resounding defeat for Princess Pinocchios”.

But just a few hours later, he found himself at the same event as Meghan’s husband, Prince Harry.

The 56-year-old TV star appeared to be brimming with confidence after the Ofcom ruling left him with a feeling of justification over his outbursts while speaking about Meghan and Harry.

Following his triumph, Piers has been vocal on social media and has once again hit out at Meghan for writing to his boss at ITV “demanding his head on a platter”.

Piers blasted Meghan, calling her decision to reach out to Dame Carolyn McCall as ‘nauseating’.

“I was reliably informed recently that Meghan Markle wrote directly to my ITV boss Dame Carolyn McCall the night before I was forced out, demanding my head on a platter,” the former Good Morning Britain host told Mail Online.

Piers went on: “Apparently, she stressed that she was writing to Dame Carolyn personally because they were both women and mothers – a nauseating playing of the gender and maternity card if ever there was one.

“What has the world come to when a whiny fork-tongued actress can dictate who presents a morning television news programme.”
