Bystanders attempted to give the stab victim some dignity as paramedics fought to save his life
Members of the public held sheets around a dying teenage boy fatally stabbed in Woolwich this afternoon (July 5).
They attempted to give him some dignity as paramedics fought to save his life after he was knifed in Woolwich New Road, by Woolwich Arsenal Park, shortly after 5.20pm.
Emergency services were quick to arrive but it was brave members of the public who stepped in to help the poor victim in the first instance.
In a shocking video seen by My London, a bystander was filmed desperately tried to perform chest compressions while he lay on the pavement covered in blood.
An air ambulance landed in the park but despite everyone’s best efforts the youngster, whose exact age has not been given by police, died where he lay just before 6.10pm.
Hundreds of people were in the area when he was attacked and a large crowd quickly formed.
Some thoughtful people held up sheets to give emergency service personnel privacy as they tried to help the victim.
One officer pleaded with the hundreds of people gathered: “Please leave the area, allow us to do what we need to do to save this man’s life”.
A nearby Tesco Extra was evacuated and armed police were seen running inside.
According to a witness, they were ‘hunting for a suspect’.
A large cordon was established which was expanded as more police arrived.
It eventually covered the whole park though some bystanders were reluctant to move away.
Police say no formal identification of the victim has taken place and officers are in the process of contacting the victim’s family while no arrests have yet been made.
A statement from the Metropolitan Police said: “Officers attended Woolwich New Road and found a teenage boy suffering from a stab injury.
“They immediately provided first aid prior to the arrival of the London Ambulance Service. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene at 18:08hrs.
“A post-mortem examination will be held in due course. A crime scene is in place and officers remain in the area.
“Enquiries continue. Any witnesses are asked to call police via 101 quoting reference Cad 5748/05Jul.”
