South London woman, 23, killed in car crash which left driver fighting for life

Police are appealing for witnesses after a woman from South London was killed and a man left fighting for his life following a car crash near Crawley on Wednesday night (September 8).

The single-car crash happened just before 8.50pm in Crawley Down on the A264, just east of the Duke’s Head roundabout, when police were called to the scene.

They found the badly damaged grey Smart car which had left the road and hit a tree.

The passenger in the car, a 23-year-old woman from Carshalton, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, a 29-year-old man from Battersea, suffered serious injuries and was rushed to St. George’s Hospital, Tooting in a life-threatening condition.

Another man, 28, in the rear passenger seat was also seriously injured, suffering multiple fractures.

He was taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

The families and next of kin for all three have been informed and road closures remain in place as police investigate the scene.

Officers from Sussex Police are now appealing for anyone who saw the vehicle or who may have CCTV or dashcam footage from the area to get in contact by emailing: [email protected] and quoting Operation Thorndon.
