My Family star Robert Lindsay’s ex-wife who you may recognise from EastEnders

Iconic noughties sitcom My Family is on our screens tonight for a trip along memory lane, allowing nostalgic comedy fans to catch-up with the dysfunctional Harper clan.

Robert Lindsay, who plays a lead role as dad Ben Harper, has been married to Cats actor Rosemarie Ford since 2006, but before that he had another wife who TV viewers might be more familiar with.

If you have ever watched The Bill, EastEnders, or Silent Witness you might have come across a character played by Robert Lindsay’s ex-wife.

Cheryl Hall rose to fame as Shirley Johnson in Citizen Smith in the late 70s, around the same time Lindsay also got the attention of the public.

More recently she starred in EastEnders as Christine, and Silent Witness as Sheryl Marsh.

However, it was her first stint in The Bill from 1981-1988 that viewers might remember her better for, this was a recurring role as Sadie.

In addition to these TV favourites she also acted in classic TV shows like Grange Hill, Inspector Morse, and Casualty.

She also had a film career through the 1970s with parts in classic British spoofs like The Magnificent Seven Deadly Sins, Rentadick, and No Sex Please, We’re British.

For Doctor Who fans Hall could have been even more familiar after she was considered for a part as Jo Grant, the companion for the third Doctor played by John Pertwee at the time – instead she played Shirna in an episode called Carnival of Monsters.

After seeing Coronation Street actor Robert Askwith in the early 70s she eventually met Robert Lindsay, marrying the My Family star in 1974, only for the couple to divorce six years later in 1980.

As well as acting there was a surprisingly random part of Hall’s career that many TV viewers might not have known about.

Hall was the Labour Party candidate for Canterbury in the 1997 general election, and a member of the Kent County council, at one point as leader of the Labour group.
