Everything you need to know about Channel 4’s Black To Front Initiative

Channel 4’s Black To Front Initiative will be airing on Friday, September 10.

In an effort to improve Black representation in the media, all of Channel 4’s shows will be fronted by Black creatives, actors and presenters for 24 hours.

Furthermore, Black people will also be in positions behind the camera.

Channel 4 commissioner, Vivienne Molokwu told Variety: “The true reality is that when you turn on British television, you’d be hard pressed to see for a few hours, let alone the whole day, only Black faces anywhere.”

Viewers will be able to watch a variety of shows that range from the news, reality tv, drama series and late night talk.

The Channel 4 project, which was first announced in August 2020, will also have Black representation in the adverts.

6am: Desmond’s

Starting off the project at 6.05 am, will be four back-to-back episodes of Desmond’s. First airing in 1989, the Peckham based-comedy ran on Channel 4 for 6 years.

8am: The Big Breakfast

Next, will be The Big Breakfast, hosted by AJ Adodu and Mo Gilligan.

The show, which aired in the 90s on Channel 4, will showcase a return of Phil Gayle, who was an original Big Breakfast newsreader.

Many celebrities which include Usain Bolt, Idris Elba, Munya Chawawa, Judi Love and Mel B, are reported to be appearing on the show as guests.

Presenter Melvin Odoom will also be out reporting for the show.

In a statement, comedian Mo Gilligan said: “Like so many of us, I loved The Big Breakfast and I am so grateful to be asked to host this special event, particularly as part of such a hugely thrilling and history making day for British television!”

AJ said: “I absolutely can’t wait to get stuck into The Big Breakfast. It is such an iconic show to be part of and I am buzzing it is finally coming back! I’m so looking forward to working with Mo and I can’t wait to wake up the nation!

“I’m thrilled to be part of Channel 4’s Black to Front – which quite rightly gives a platform to deserving Black British TV talent across our industry, both on and off-screen. It’s going to be really special.”

10am: Black-ish

At 10am, episodes of the Black-American drama Black-ish will air.

The show features actors Anthony Anderson, Tracee Ellis Ross and Yara Shahidi.

12pm: Liam Bakes

Liam Bakes airs at 12pm.

The former Great British Bake Off contestant will showcase his culinary skills through his Jamaican roots.

12.30pm: Mel B’s Packed Lunch

Spice Girl Mel B will be entertaining viewers at lunch time as she presents Steph McGovern’s show.

The episode will include celebrity interviews and discussions.

2.10pm: Countdown

The great Sir Trevor McDonald will be hosting countdown!

In statement, the legendary broadcaster said: “I am proud and delighted to be presenting Countdown on this special day; I have always enjoyed watching Countdown, a show that has been around for almost as long as I have!”

Author, poet and broadcaster Lemn Sissay OBE will be in charge of the Dictionary Corner for the episode, whilst mathematician Dr Anne-Marie Imafidon MBE will take over the numbers round.

3pm: A Place In The Sun

A Place In The Sun regular Jean Johannson will be continuing her presenting duties for the day as she helps a couple from Croydon find a property in Marbella.

Speaking about the initiative, she said: “I am delighted to be part of the Black to Front project, championing Black talent on and off screen. This is an important day in broadcasting and I’m extremely excited to be hosting this very special episode of A Place in the Sun.”

4pm: The Great House Giveaway

Tayo Oguntonade, who is a property expert, is the newest presenter on show and will be here to stay.

5pm: Come Dine With Me

Come Dine With Me will showcase the six Black contestants who have been at cooking competition with one another.

6pm: Hollyoaks

Hollyoaks will be airing at 6pm, but it will look very different.

The hour-long special, which was written and directed by Black talent, will feature an all-Black cast.

The episode will be focused on the Deveraux family, who are throwing a birthday BBQ party

7pm Channel 4 News

Black-British journalists Ayshah Tull and Keme Nzerem will head the news team at 7pm.

8pm: Love It Or List It

For Friday’s episode, Kirstie and Phil will be replaced by property developers Scarlette and Stuart Douglas, who are brother and sister.

The show follows them advise a multi-generational Black family on whether they should sell or renovate.

9pm: Celebrity Gogglebox

9pm will showcase many Black-British celebrities on the Celebrity Gogglebox sofa.

Charlene White, Judi Love, Ashley Banjo and Rudolph Walker are among the many familiar faces.

10pm: Highlife

Toni, Kamille, Tomi, Cheifer, Bernicia, Cuppy, Kidd and Irene

The reality series that focuses on young, British, West Africans will air at 10pm. This will be the first of a four part series.

11pm: Big Age

After Highlife, comedy pilot Big Age will be on the screens.

Written by Bolu Babalola, the show will follow four Black British friends navigate life through the expectations of their parents and their own desires.

11.30pm Unapologetic

Radio presenter Yinka Bokinni and social media commentator Zeze Millz will be taking over late night television with their chat show, Unapologetic.

12.30am: Moonlight

At 12.30am viewers can kick back and enjoy a screening of the Oscar award-winning movie, Moonlight.

2.30am: I Am Danielle

At 2.30am, BAFTA award-winning actress will be gracing the scenes in the drama I Am Danielle.

3.20am: Come Dine With Me

Finally, from 3.20am to 6am, this week’s special edition episodes of Come Dine With Me will be on air.
