The statement ended with Boycie’s famous catchphrase, “You know it makes sense!”

Former Eastenders actor Shane Ritchie worked with John Challis on ITV comedy sitcom Benidorm and posted a photo of the pair from the show.

In the tweet, Shane Richie was clearly in awe and admiration of John after the time they spent together.

“The laughs we had sharing tapas & fine wine, such a bleedin’ honour to be in his company. Being your friend meant the world to me, John and I’m so glad I told you and you gave the best man hugs,” he said.

“4ever in my heart, mate . ‘Sammy will ALWAYS love you Monty’. R.I.P big man red heart.”

Other actors from Only Fools and Horses also shared their tributes to the late star, with David Jason, who played Del Boy, describing John’s death as an “incredibly sad time”.

“Such sad news. John was such a lovely man, a fine actor and a friend for over forty years. Hard to think of the world without him. Condolences to his family at this incredibly sad time,” he said.

Sue Holdness, who played Boycie’s wife Marlene tweeted: “Marlene without Boycie – it’s unthinkable. John Challis was my partner on screen and stage for 36 years and my beloved friend. R.I.P. darling John. I will miss you every day.”

John’s family said donations in his memory can be made to his chosen animal charities Cuan Wildlife Rescue, Tusk or the British Hedgehog Preservation Society.
