Chris Packham’s stepdaughter Megan McCubbin is back on our screens alongside the famous naturalist, currently appearing in Chris and Meg’s Wild Summer.
As we emerge out of lockdown, the ever-entertaining pair are taking their electric caravan round some of the UK’s last surviving untouched wildlife hotspots.
Megan, who trained as a zoologist at Liverpool University, won the hearts of fans practically overnight when she first joined Chris on Springwatch – in some cases, quite literally.
In a previous interview with Hello! magazine, Meg revealed how she had actually been proposed to by one besotted fan.
She said: “I had this young man who contacted me to say that his older brother would like to marry me but is too afraid to message me directly.
“But if I’d like to message him, here’s his account.
“I said: ‘You’re going to get in so much trouble but that’s very sweet.
“I like the effort.'”
Chris was in a relationship with Megan’s mum Jo McCubbin for ten years, and became a father figure to Megan from when she was just two years old.
The pair of wildlife enthusiasts are incredibly close, and share a mutual appreciation of each other’s talents.
Describing Megan’s Springwatch debut, Chris said: “She did really well.
“I said to her: ‘You figure out what you want to say and I’ll fill in around you.’
“I don’t need to own anything, I’ve got nothing to prove.
“I was there as a support mechanism, really, and wasn’t needed.”

He added: “She believes in what she’s got to say, she’s excited by the science and committed to the environmental aspects of it.”
Although Chris and Jo are no longer together, Chris is still a big part of Megan’s life – she even moved in with him for lockdown in 2020, as the family decided it was safer than staying with Jo, who is a nurse.
Megan was actually scouted by the Springwatch producers after her and Chris started the ‘Self-Isolating Bird Club’, a 30-minute daily livestream on Facebook from their back garden.
The young conservationist said: “I was slightly nervous, but I met Chris when I was two years old so have always grown up around film crews.
“I was with my stepdad, and who better to learn from than him?
“He’s a role model of mine professionally and it’s great that he happens to be my stepdad as well.”
Although Chris never wanted children, he confessed in a 2020 interview that he would always care about Megan in a parental way, and struggles not to ‘mollycoddle’ her.
He said: “It’s hard – she’s an adult, but she gets upset when Charlotte and I, or her mum and I, discuss her welfare,” referring to his current partner Charlotte Corney.
Chris went on: “But I don’t think that’s ever going to go away.
“My parents were the same.
“You just have to accept that parents will always have that residual mollycoddling worry.
“And that can’t be unhealthy.”
You can watch Chris and Meg’s Wild Summer on BBC 2 tonight (Sunday, September 12) at 8.30pm.
