Princess Diana’s favourite Gucci handbag has been given a chic new update, so you can tap into the Royal’s timeless style

Upwards of 20 years after the original iteration caught Princess Diana’s eye, Gucci’s Alessandro Michele has reimagined the royal’s favourite Diana Bag, bringing it back from the archives with the addition of a neon belt wrapped around its iconic bamboo handles.

Not the first time Michele has been inspired by the brand’s past collections, the Creative Director has repeatedly exercised a talent for taking heritage pieces and transforming them into something more relevant to the time. Case in point: the renaissance of the Jackie bag on the AW20 runway. Now? It’s the turn of the bamboo-adorned 90s favourite, which is back and better than ever.

The original structured tote first made its debut back in 1991, shooting to the top of the wish lists of every fashion fan around the globe after Lady Di donned it with jeans, a white shirt and loafers or structured summer dresses alike. Synonymous with her versatile style, it signalled a certain freedom and bolder fashion choices which came with Lady Di’s decision to distance herself from the Royal Family.

Gucci’s updated version of the Diana – which has already been spotted on the arms of Sienna Miller, Jodie Turner-Smith and Elle Fanning – is available in three sizes: small, medium and large. And a whole plethora of mood-boosting hues, no less. Much like the original, bamboo handles remain, but the new-and-improved version features a statement leather belt around said handles in interchangeable neon yellow, pink or orange. What’s more, initials and star symbols can be embossed on the inside of the belts for added personalisation.

As for the closest replication of Diana’s own favourite? That’d be the timeless brown leather. Elsewhere, emerald and rose pink nod towards the brand’s mission to promote self-expression through its releases.
