Here’s Why Lorde Is Suddenly No Longer Performing at the VMAs

Looks like Lorde is no longer performing at the 2021 VMAs, which is a huge bummer for everyone excited to see her sing “Solar Power” live. The VMAs’ official Twitter account reported the news just over a week before the show, writing “Due to a change in production elements, Lorde can no longer perform at this year’s show. We love Lorde and cannot wait for her to perform on the VMA stage in the future! 💛”

Truly no idea what a “change in production elements” could possibly mean, but Lorde hasn’t given any further details.

As a reminder, Lorde performed at the VMAs back in 2017, but did her entire set in complete silence. As in, she danced around the stage but didn’t sing due to having the flu.

“It’s sort of embarrassing to watch someone experience intense joy,” she said of the performance, per Us Weekly. “I think that’s why people find what I do quite disconcerting. People got, like, so angry about me performing at the VMAs. I just danced. I just danced! And I danced with full fucking joy. Some people were like, ‘We get it, we love it.’ And some people were like, ‘This is offensive that I have to watch this.’”

Lorde is up for a VMA this year, and it’s unclear if she’ll still attend the show despite not performing. According to Deadline, we should expect performances from Justin Bieber, Kacey Musgraves, Chlöe, Doja Cat, Shawn Mendes, Twenty One Pilots, Camila Cabello, Lil Nas X, Machine Gun Kelly, and Olivia Rodrigo, so at least there’s that!
