Charles reveals details of his conversation with Prince Philip on eve of his death

The Prince of Wales said he spoke to Philip the day before his death about arrangements for his 100th birthday.

Speaking to the BBC, Charles said he called his father and told him: “We’re talking about your birthday.”

Philip replied: “Well I’ve got to be alive for it, haven’t I?”

Charles said: “I knew you’d say that!”

A number of royals, including Princes Harry and William, have also spoken for the BBC One programme Prince Philip: The Royal Family Remembers.

William remembers a humorous exchange between his grandfather, who created the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme, and a group of youths on the Balmoral estate.

The youths were taking an expedition for the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

William said: “He stopped and wound down his window and said, ‘Good morning. How are you getting on?’ To which the smallest young chap at the back turned round and effectively said, ‘Jog on Grandpa!’”

Amused by the incident, Philip turned to his grandson and said: “The youth of today!”

Prince Harry praised his grandfather for offering the Queen unwavering support throughout their marriage.

“From my grandmother’s perspective, to have someone like that on your shoulder for 73 years of marriage – it doesn’t get better than that.”

The programme, which will broadcast on Wednesday evening, is Harry’s first joint venture with members of his family since his quit his role as a senior working royal last year.

He flew back for his grandfather’s funeral in April, leaving his then pregnant wife Meghan Markle in the US with their son Archie.
